Westlawn Middle School is honored to welcome Ms. Nakelya Mullins as its proud principal. The 2026–2027 school year marks her 22nd year in education, with her entire career dedicated to serving the students, families, and communities of Tuscaloosa City Schools.

Ms. Mullins began her educational journey as a classroom teacher, spending four years inspiring students and fostering a love of learning. She then served as an instructional coach for four years, supporting educators in implementing effective instructional strategies designed to strengthen teaching and improve student achievement. She later served as an assistant principal for two years, where she expanded her leadership experience and focused on school improvement. For the past 11 years, Ms. Mullins has had the privilege of serving as a principal, and her passion for education, leadership, and student success continues to grow each year.

At Westlawn Middle School, the belief that “No Student Is Invisible and Every Student Is an Exploring Star” guides the school’s commitment to meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of every Falcon Star. Ms. Mullins is committed to using student data, intentional instructional practices, meaningful relationships, and collaborative decision-making to continuously improve student outcomes and create opportunities for every student to thrive.

Ms. Mullins is also the proud mother of twin sons, Taylor and Tyler, who are entering their Freshman year at The Illustrious Tuskegee University. They inspire her daily to make today better than yesterday, and that same inspiration fuels her commitment to creating meaningful and memorable opportunities for the students of Westlawn.

Ms. Mullins firmly believes that Westlawn’s students deserve the very best. With a shared commitment, creativity, compassion, and heart, she is confident there is no goal the Falcon Family cannot accomplish together. She looks forward to navigating the 2026–2027 school year with enthusiasm, positivity, and the understanding that every challenge presents another opportunity to learn, grow, and shine.
