Battle of the Books + Reading Hype Squad

Battle of the Books

Date: April 30, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM
Location: Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy

TCS Battle of the Books is a reading competition between all TCS middle schools. Students read the five pre-chosen books, then take part in head-to-head matches against other middle schools. Students begin reading the books in the fall, with team practices ramping up in January. Because our numbers per school are limited, a local WMS preliminary Battle of the Books might be necessary depending on student interest.

More information will be announced in September.

Reading Hype Squad

The WMS Reading Hype Squad supports the school’s Literacy Liaison Team by helping promote a culture of reading throughout Westlawn. Members assist with a variety of literacy initiatives, including distributing monthly birthday books provided by The House Tuscaloosa, supporting our annual free book fair, and helping with additional book distributions during the school year.

The squad also plays an important role in encouraging student engagement with reading by assisting with monthly reading challenges and helping create excitement around literacy across campus. Through their efforts, the Reading Hype Squad helps ensure that every Falcon Star has opportunities to discover the joy of reading.
